community

Strong communities are essential to a strong health care system.

NCMSF invests in community-based initiatives that expand access to care, support providers in times of crisis, and address urgent public health challenges across North Carolina.

From disaster relief to substance use treatment and clinician well-being, our work is grounded in the needs of the communities we serve.

Disaster Relief

Responding When It Matters Most

When disaster strikes, health care providers are often among the first to respond, and the most impacted.

NCMSF’s Disaster Relief efforts provide rapid, targeted support to medical practices affected by events like hurricanes and other natural disasters, helping them remain operational and continue serving their communities.

From Hurricane Florence to more recent storms like Hurricane Helene, NCMSF has mobilized quickly to deliver critical assistance when it’s needed most.

How It Works

NCMSF provides expedited financial assistance to practices impacted by:

  • Rapid-response funding for impacted practices
  • Support to maintain continuity of care
  • Ongoing readiness to deploy resources in future emergencies

Financial Recovery Program

Supporting the practices that communities depend on

During the COVID-19 pandemic, NCMSF launched the Financial Recovery Program (FRP) to stabilize independent medical practices facing unprecedented financial strain.

With funding from the North Carolina General Assembly, the program provided large-scale reimbursement for pandemic-related expenses, ensuring practices could continue operating and delivering care.

NCPHP

Supporting the Well-Being of Medical Professionals

The North Carolina Professionals Health Program (NCPHP) exists to support medical professionals facing substance use, mental health challenges, burnout, and other personal or professional difficulties.

Originally established within the NC Medical Society and supported by NCMSF, NCPHP was created as a safe, confidential pathway for providers to seek help—without fear of stigma or professional consequence. Today, it operates as an independent nonprofit, continuing to serve clinicians across North Carolina.

At its core, NCPHP recognizes a critical truth: when providers are supported, patients and communities benefit.

How It Works

NCPHP offers a structured, compassionate approach to care, including:

  • Confidential screening and assessment for stigmatized health conditions like mental illness or substance use
  • Referral to trusted treatment and support services
  • Ongoing monitoring and recovery support
  • Guidance for navigating licensure, employment, and return to practice

This model helps providers address challenges early, access appropriate care, and rebuild both personal well-being and professional stability.

“

When my world came crashing down, due to consequences of active opiate addiction, NCPHP was there to help me organize the process of detox, rehab and monitor early recovery.

Through NCPHP’s advocacy and leadership, I was afforded the opportunity to regain my medical license. Eight years into recovery I am blessed with a personal and professional life that far exceeds my wildest expectations.”
